Hey, hey, hey! Welcome to the very first episode of a call to serve. This is a show, a podcast, calling entrepreneurs, coaches, healers, creatives, and transformative leaders who want to make a difference in their communities to show up and to show up with integrity, to use their power and to practice radical service.
My name is Andréa Ranae and just in case we haven’t met yet, let me introduce myself. I am most known for a program that I created a little over two years ago called Coaching as Activism where I have supported hundreds of healers and coaches, artists and teachers to understand on a deeper level what’s going on in the world around them, how they are connected to the collective and how the work that they’re doing in the world is connected to social justice and oppression, injustice and so on. So a lot of talking about white supremacy, a lot of talking about other forms of domination and colonization.
So that’s one piece of me. And alongside of that I coach one on one. I offer workshops and trainings. I am the founder of Whole / Self Liberation, which is a resource for Black and Brown and Indigenous folx to grow and get free and this is currently on hiatus, but it’s relaunching in 2019 and I’m super excited about that and I have a couple of other projects on my plate that are a little hush hush, but I will share them as I give myself permission to.
At the time of recording, I am a 24 year old, black, cisgender, queer femme and I’m living in Chicago, Illinois. I’m the daughter of a coach dad and a facilitator mom and I am a big sister to two wild and brilliant kids. I am a plant mama and I am obsessed with my plant babies. And I have spent literally my entire life asking three questions. In what ways can I heal and grow? Why is the world way it is? And how can I help? Imagine an eight year old asking these questions of themselves.
So I’ve always felt a call to serve and I really want to talk about this. I know that I’m not the only one because if you’re reading this, you’re probably relating to me right now at least on some level. But I also want to get into the nuances and the intricacies of what it looks like to serve and serve well, to serve from a nourished place and to sustain yourself as you are serving other people, but also how to honor the sovereignty of other people and that some people may not need your service. So I, I want to get into all of it.
One of the big reasons why I am doing this podcast is because I believe that the majority of service-based and transformative entrepreneurs are doing the work that they’re doing because they want to support others – because they see a problem or an issue or a struggle that’s happening in the people around them or in the lives and communities of people in the world and they want to offer something to help. And so I really want to speak with them. You, if that’s you, about how you can have the greatest influence possible.
Another reason why I am starting the show is because there are so many gaps, so many opportunities that are left on the table when we’re not connecting with the people when we’re not connecting with our communities and clear on what our work actually is, what’s actually needed, or the power that we have and I want to disrupt the popular ideas that we have about what it looks like to impact the world around us. But the most important and core reason for all of this is for the cause and practice of liberation. And here’s what I mean by that.
Of course, if you’ve been paying attention, the state of the world is pretty rough, you know. Lives are at stake. People’s wellbeing is at stake. Communities, histories, languages, all of it is at stake. The earth is at stake. And so there is a lot of work to be done. And I truly believe that those of us that have taken it upon ourselves to create something, to use our gifts and our skills, our talents, our perspective to try to support other people have a huge opportunity to make a dent in that work that is ahead of us and ahead of our descendants. So we have this opportunity and because we have that opportunity, we have a responsibility. Without our businesses, we already have a responsibility. We have a responsibility to each other for the ways that we’re impacting each other. But when we have the kind of power that we have as business owners, as creators of something that maybe hasn’t been created before, we have a particular responsibility to recognize the context that we’re living within and the power that we have to influence the lives of the people that we’re working with, that we’re serving.
And so for me, there are multiple levels to this, to this podcast. Uh, because I recognized from a very young age that when I speak, people tend to listen. And that is a privilege like no other. So I want to use that. I’m gonna to use that for some good, but also, uh, where the liberation comes in. This for me is that I’ve always run away from that. I have always run away from the fact that people want to listen to me, that people want to hear from me. I like, it literally makes me squirm. So that’s why I’m here.
This is literally the third time that I’ve tried to do a podcast. You could probably find the other two if you looked for them on iTunes… but don’t. So there is a piece for me that has multiple layers that I’m not going to get into right now because I really want to keep this short. So I’m working on showing up the way that I want to show up, showing up with integrity, owning my power and practicing radical service.
So over the course of this podcast, I’ll be sharing what I’ve got on this, what questions I have, ideas I have. And I’ll also be inviting wonderful teachers, activists, coaches, healers, leaders into this conversation to share their experiences and knowledge and practices with you. So I hope that this grows and grows and grows into something that influences you and changes your business and transforms the way that we practice business and leadership as a collective.
Alright, so I’m going to let you get to the next episode, but first I just want to thank you for listening to this episode, but I also have an ask.
I would love, love, love, love 1) If you could leave a review. Especially if you know me and you appreciate my presence, I would so appreciate you sharing a review on iTunes. 2) If we don’t know each other and if we’re not connected on social media, Instagram especially, or Facebook, please connect with me. My Insta handle is at @andrearanaej and that is the same case for Facebook (facebook.com/andrearanaej) and I would love to connect with you there. The third thing is if you know anybody, if you can think of anybody that might be interested in this podcast, please share it, share it on your insta story, share it, email it to them, a dm it to them, like whatever you can do to to to share to get the word out. I would be so, so, so grateful.
Thank you so much. I hope you enjoy the next episode and I’ll talk to you later.
